A Tangled Mess

Of course we all know there have been some severely dry summers lately. It looks like the drought from 2011 is heading into a new phase. Many of the trees in the Beavers Bend and Broken Bow area have died from the extreme heat and lack of water. Those trees have now been dead or dying for close to a year. As they die and become brittle, many can no longer fight gravity or the wind and fall over. By no means have a majority of the trees died, but it doesn't take many to wreak havoc on modern civilization. Within the last two weeks, trees have taken out power lines on two different occasions. Choctaw Electric did a great job restoring the electricity within a few hours of either incident. However, with winter just a few months away, there may be a little more to worry about. Dead trees have no chance against the weight of accumulating  ice or snow.

Beavers Bend Log Cabins Reviews

If you are planning a visit to Beavers Bend and want to find out if Beavers Bend Log Cabins and our cabins Autumn Pointe or Spokane is the right choice for you, reading reviews from previous guests is a good way to find out.

Here are just a few reviews from previous guests about both of our cabins on Facebook.

Stefanie - "We stayed at Spokane with our family of 4. We were there for 3 days which was not enough time. We loved the stocked pond and wish we would have had more time to fish. Love the hot tub...again wish we would have had more time in it! Location was great. Way off the road but still close enough to all the fun things Beaver's Bend/Broken Bow has to offer!"

Melissa - "We really enjoyed our time at Spokane. The cabin was beautiful and very peaceful! The boys enjoyed fishing in the stocked pond and caught some large catfish! My two younger boys did not want to leave and wished we could live there."

Restaurants in Beavers Bend Area

Hochatown, which in a way is synonymous with Beavers Bend, is about ten miles north of Broken Bow. There, you will find multiple restaurants, ranging from freshly made pizza to prime rib. Currently, there is another restaurant being constructed. They will be serving fried chicken and fish, at least that's what I heard through the grapevine. With the new place and a few others that have made their way to the area, Hochatown now has much more of a dinning selection then just a few years ago. You can view a list of these establishments, along with customer reviews at: Restaurants in Beavers Bend

Keeping it in the Family

When we decided to move to the Beavers Bend area, it was based mainly on the upkeep of our rental cabins. For three years now, we have managed, cleaned, repaired, and basically done everything ourselves relating to our properties. At first, we felt it would be overwhelming to take on every aspect of our business, but quickly learned how important it truly is. Since we own both properties, we are always trying to make them perfect for any and all guests. There is rarely a day goes by that something, big or small, could or should be done at one of the cabins. For instance, I cut, split, and season all firewood for the indoor fireplaces. Without properly cut and seasoned wood, an indoor fire typically turns into a frustrating experience. If poison ivy should appear, I am there to spray or remove it before it spreads. We also check all dishes, flatware, and utensils prior to putting them in their proper place. Simple, but important things like this can make a huge difference in a guests stay. Doing it ourselves may take more time and effort, but at least it gets done properly and makes our guests happy. By the number of return guests and word of mouth recommendations, we believe it is well worth it.

Great new place to eat.

In early March a small restaurant named Shady Oaks located just minutes from Beavers Bend State Park reopened. It is next to Hochatown Country Lodge across from the Hwy 259a southern state park entrance. My wife and I mainly cook our own meals, but tonight decided to give Shady Oaks a try. Also, we often receive questions from our cabin guests about local restaurants and wanted to confirm food quality prior to dishing out recommendations. Everybody working was very friendly and the food was delicious. I had the cheeseburger basket with onion rings, while my wife had the pork ribs with a side of fried pickles. The interior is clean and well kept, with a cozy diner feel. If you are in the area on vacation, or just driving up highway 259, Shady Oaks is definitely worth a visit. You can view Shady Oaks Restaurant menu here.

Fishing in Beavers Bend

We often receive questions about places to fish in Beavers Bend State Park. The park has several easy access bridges and river front areas allowing visitors to cast into the crystal clear Lower Mountain Fork River. Rainbow trout are stocked regularly, almost guaranteeing fisherman and women will not be disappointed. Just remember, you must first have the necessary fishing license from the state of Oklahoma. You may purchase fishing license online via Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation website.

Some sad news about the beautiful trees in the Beavers Bend area. It appears due to the drought last Summer, many of the local trees have developed a fungus that cannot be treated. It is called hypoxylon canker and has affected many trees. It can be clearly seen while driving through the area. It can spread from tree to tree and those that are affected will have to be cut down and burned on the spot. If your trees have lost their leaves on top, or never shed them from last Fall, it could be a symptom of the fungus. Luckily, our cabins were not affected, but others in the area had major losses.
